Research projects in Anthropology of the Americas

The Department of Anthropology of the Americas at the University of Bonn is characterized not only by its wide range of courses but also by its diverse research projects. It sees itself as a modern discipline that examines key current questions in the humanities, cultural studies, and social sciences from a Latin American perspective, developing research contributions primarily within an international framework. The distinctive approach of Anthropology of the Americas lies in its inherent interdisciplinarity, allowing for the integration of archaeological, ethnohistorical, linguistic, epigraphic, iconographic, and ethnographic methods. This multidisciplinary approach is increasingly complemented by decolonial research perspectives. Mesoamerican Studies critically engages with its colonial academic history as well as with present societal discourses in the pluricultural nations of Latin America.

Our research projects are diverse, combining archaeological, (ethno)historical, and natural science issues inquiries. Current topics include the preservation and sustainable development of culturally shaped biospheres, migration, and land-use patterns.

Mesoamerica

The spectrum of our research projects ranges from the documentation of hieroglyphic texts, rock art, and ancient sites to the investigation of forms of ritual violence and the mobilization of indigenous memory cultures in the modern nation-state.

Latin America in Europe

The centuries-long exchange between Latin America and Europe also includes the emergence of museums and fields of research. An EU project is dedicated to the material cultures stored in museums and their processing in 3D models.
